The Arts District Medallions, Los Angeles, CA

A public art commission of 56 medallions on BSL light poles in the 8 block area of the original Arts District, east of Alameda St and between 1st and 7th Streets.  Selected through competition and jury, Valerie Mitchell designed and contracted the process to have the dimensional medallions represent the history of the area while paying homage to the historic Fourth Street Bridge trillium as the outer triangle.  One of The Inserts reflect the orchards and vinyards of the area in the 1800's and the other insert acknowldedges early 1980's signage of artists in the now industrial buildings by alluding to the fire department placard that graced the early artist live/work buildings and ordinance.  The project was made possible by a grant from CRA/Los Angeles,  HCNC and other local support.  The medallions are aluminum with a special powder coat digital design process, approximately 36".  The 56 Arts District Medallions are copyright by  Valerie Mitchell.
